This cyclical pattern perpetuates frustration and a lack of sustainable progress.
The Problem with Restrictive Diets:
At first glance, the practice of alternating between dieting and indulging might not appear problematic. The lure of eating freely when not on a diet is compelling. However, this approach harbors significant pitfalls. Without incorporating weightlifting into their regimen, individuals not only shed fat but also lose a portion of their muscle mass during weight loss phases. This reduction in muscle mass adversely affects metabolism and overall health.
Changed Body Composition:
Over an extended period, this yo-yo dieting results in substantial changes in body composition. A person who was 180 pounds with 15% body fat at the age of 20 might, by the age of 40, still weigh 180 pounds but have 30% body fat. Despite the unchanged weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), their health has deteriorated.
